Gertrude’s at the Desert Botanical Garden

Hires Executive Chef Matt Taylor

PHOENIX – (February 19, 2014) – Gertrude’s has a new executive chef.  Matt Taylor is departing Market Street Kitchen, to take the helm at the Desert Botanical Garden’s acclaimed full-service restaurant starting March 4.

Skip Hause, owner of Fabulous Food Fine Catering & Events and operator of Gertrude’s, could not be happier. “Matt’s list of accolades is amazing,” beams Hause. “Gertrude’s first year was extraordinary and having Matt’s innovative style and reputation with Modern American Cuisine ensures Gertrude’s fare will continue to impress.”

Taylor has worked with top chefs like James Beard winner Bradford Thompson, James Beard winner Robert McGrath and celebrity chef Michael Mina. He has also been at the helm of top local restaurants like Metro Brasserie and NOCA.

Taylor is eager for the challenge and has a vision for Gertrude’s. He believes the Garden’s signature eatery has the potential to become one of Arizona’s iconic restaurants. Given that Taylor began his career at the Phoenician’s five star Mary Elaine’s, Hause is betting that Taylor knows icon potential when he sees it.

Gertrude’s offers indoor and patio dining, a private chef’s room for 12 and an expansive bar.  Reservations for lunch and dinner are suggested and can be made on Open Table (www.opentable.com) or by calling Gertrude’s at 480.719.8600. Hours are Monday – Sunday from 7 a.m.–9 p.m. Sunday brunch 9 a.m.– 4 p.m. Garden admission is not required to dine at Gertrude’s.

Background

The restaurant’s namesake, Mrs. Gertrude Divine Webster, an environmentalist ahead of her time founded the Desert Botanical Garden in 1939. Webster, in conjunction with a small group of Valley citizens, gathered in Papago Park to create a botanical garden to educate, understand, appreciate and promote the uniqueness of the Sonoran Desert. She foresaw the potential to create a distinctive identity for the Phoenix area by envisioning the need to conserve the beautiful desert.
